Essential Tips for Flawless Machine Quilting
1. Square up your quilt. If your quilt is significantly out of square, it can negatively impact the quality of the quilting. I can deal with most sizes and shapes and can often make undetectable adjustments to the quilting.
2. The backing should be seamed with the selvages trimmed off. Quilts with untrimmed selvages create extra tension in the seams.
3. The backing and batting must be at least 6 inches longer and wider than the quilt top. (3" each side, top and bottom)
4. Trim any loose threads from the quilt top and backing. (The ones underneath can show, though the ones on top can catch on the machine.)
5. Do not pin or baste the top to the batting or backing. This is done on my machine.
6. If your top or backing has a definite top/bottom orientation, please mark the top with a safety pin or attach a note to ensure I load the pieces properly.
7. Press the quilt top and backing and fold neatly. Press toward the darker color on the top (this keeps the dark color from showing through) and seam the backing flat (this will reduce the bulk a bit).
8. If your quilt top is pieced to the edge, sew at least an inch of odd fabric on the bottom and the top (which should be trimmed off before binding). This allows me to quilt within 1/2 inch of the edge since the odd fabric will be the portion that is pin-blasted to the quilting leader.
9. Please ensure your borders are flat. Any fullness will result in tucks or pleats.
10. Please wait until the quilt is returned to you to attach any embellishments, buttons, beads, etc.; these too will catch on the machine.
Cutting The Binding
The binding for most quilts is cut on the straight grain of the fabric. If your quilt has curved edges, cut the strips on the bias.
Joining
Join the strips with diagonal seams to make one continuous binding strip. Trim excess fabric, leaving 1/4" seam allowances. Press the seam allowances open. Then, with the wrong sides together, fold the binding strip in half lengthwise and press.
